OUR VISION, MISSION, PRINCIPLES AND HISTORY

The Mountain Institute (TMI) is dedicated solely to addressing the unique needs of conservation and equitable development in mountain communities throughout the world.

Our vision is a world where mountains and mountain people are valued and understood as integral and important to all of the world’s ecosystems and to the human populations that live within them; and where thriving mountain communities prosper in ecologically rich mountain environments.

Our mission is to conserve mountain environments, improve mountain livelihoods, and support mountain cultures.

We approach our work with the following basic principles:
• Integration of livelihood development, environmental stewardship and cultural sustainability
• Long-term relationships/commitments with the people and regions we support
• Teamwork and collaboration within the Institute and with our partners
• Cultural sensitivity and fluency in the regions where we work
• Measurable results and accountability to those whom we serve

The Mountain Institute was established in 1972, first as the Woodlands Institute in West Virginia. Its earliest work concentrated on alternative energy, experiential education and leadership for West Virginia’s youth. Courses and offices were based at its 400-acre nature preserve on the slopes of West Virginia’s highest mountain, Spruce Knob. TMI became an international organization in 1987, when it helped to create new protected areas in Nepal and Tibet (Tibet Autonomous Region, China). A regional office was established in Kathmandu, Nepal, and in Huaraz, Peru a few years later. Its mission expanded in 1993 to include livelihood development and the conservation of culture and natural resources within the world’s longest, oldest and highest mountain ranges―the Andes, Appalachians, and Himalayas.

Additional offices now exist in China and India. New programs are underway in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and planned for Mongolia. TMI’s original home, the Spruce Knob Mountain Learning Center, continues to operate as an education, conservation and conference facility. Many of TMI’s international exchanges also use the facility. A new international headquarters was established in Washington, D.C. in 2002, which provides technical, logistical and financial support services to the regional offices.

CHINA PROGRAM- PLATEAU DEVELOPMENT PROJECT (PDP)

The PDP’s three main objectives are: (1) to improve livelihoods by building capacity of targeted communities and enterprises to plan, implement, and monitor more complex programs through its potential work in one or both of the following- Deqin Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan, and Aba Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan; (2) to improve environmental conservation and natural resource management of the rangeland; and (3) to increase the capacity of Tibetans to preserve their unique cultural heritage. Activities within the agricultural sector will link farmers to markets and create new and/or strengthened businesses. Planned environmental and livelihood results include improvements in the targeted rangelands, reduced grazing, and increased opportunities for alternate income generating activities. The proposed PDP will look to leverage previous impacts made by other development and private sector initiatives, will strengthen the capacity of the Tibetan communities to take care of their environment, resources, and culture, and conduct active awareness raising programs combined with rangeland restoration interventions. Village-based enterprises will be essential to the sustainability of project activities as well as overall program goals. Activities to promote handicraft development and cultural (and environmental) eco-tourism will be integrated into program planning, where feasible, through building capacity of artisans to produce marketable handicrafts and communities to develop cultural heritage management plans.
