HSBC staff lend help

NEARLY 300 finance professionals from HSBC Bank (China) Co have given up their National Day holidays to work as Special Olympics volunteers.

The bank staff will act as volunteers from September 28 to October 12 to offer logistics support to athletes from countries like the United States.

They will also work at the venues for baseball and softball games.

"We are proud to see the enthusiasm of our staff for their volunteer work at the Special Olympics," said Richard Yorke, president and chief executive officer of HSBC Bank (China) Co.

The HSBC employees underwent weekend training before the Games. The bank has adjusted its work schedules to enable employees to work as Games volunteers on weekdays.

The bank, which has registered its China incorporation in Shanghai, also teamed up with the organizing committee of the Games and the Shanghai Education Committee to co-publish 80,000 copies of a booklet on the Games.

The booklets have been sent to 1,600 elementary and middle schools in the city to help them better understand the Games.

"Contributing to the communities in which we operate is an important part of HSBC's corporate culture and the Special Olympics offers an excellent opportunity for us to do that," Yorke said.

HSBC has a strong commitment to China and is expanding its network, adding to its workforce and becoming more involved in more social-responsibility activities in the country.
