The Global Environmental Institute (GEI) is a Chinese non-profit, non-governmental organization established in Beijing, China in 2004. GEI’s mission is to design and implement market-based models for solving environmental problems in order to achieve development that is economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable.
Since its inception, GEI has been focusing on the development of rural areas, especially in the southwest region of China, which plays a key role in maintaining the biodiversity of the country. In the last four years, we have worked on exploring new approaches to improve the income of farmers living in those poor areas. In the meantime, we also conduct intensive studies to ensure that our approaches are sustainable and do not harm to the environment. To these ends, we have arrived at the creation of sustainable rural ventures (SRVs). SRVs offer low-income farmers to significantly increase their income through the creation of businesses that build on the farmers’ existing knowledge base and the conservation of the local ecosystem. In March of 2007, GEI incubated and established a company based upon this concept. The purpose of the company, Lijiang Snow Mountain Organics (LSMO), is to market and sell high quality organic produce harvested by local Lijiang farmers. In addition, we are also planning to set up similar business entities in our project sites in Sichuan Province and Tibet Autonomous Region so as to build opportunities for small farmers to reach larger markets.
Sustainable Rural Entrepreneur Incubation Project
GEI initiated the Sustainable Rural Entrepreneur Incubation Project in early 2008. Through a comprehensive training, we aim to identify young entrepreneurs who possess a strong sense of social responsibility, a professional background in enterprise management and the financial system and a determination to promote the development of SRVs in China.
Over the course of one year, the training will provide an in-class curriculum , on-site practice, and multiple workshops. In March 2008, GEI has conducted the first set of training sessions in Lijiang. Based on the successful experience, the second set of training sessions will be conducted at GEI’s project site in Baoxing, Sichuan Province. Trainees will attend courses on enterprise management, accounting, finance and related topics directed towards the creation and running of a successful SRV. Following classroom-based preparations, participants will implement their training through participation in the development of business entities of GEI’s project in Baoxing.
