The Wildlife Conservation Society

  The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) saves wildlife and wild lands through careful science, international conservation, education, and the management of the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks. These activities change attitudes toward nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in sustainable interaction on both a local and a global scale.   WCS China is looking for a highly qualified professional to fill the following position

  Tiger Program Manager

  Duty location:Hunchun, Jilin Province

  Duration:One Year (extendable)

  Report to:WCS China Country Director

  Deadline of Receiving Application: 8 Sept, 2008

  Main Duties and Responsibilities

  Under the guidance and direction of the WCS China Country Director, the Tiger Program Manager will be responsible for the implementation of the WCS Tiger Program in Northeast China. Specifically, the Tiger Program Manager will have a leadership role in performing the following tasks.

  1. Leadership and Program Management: Formulate and develop program strategies, activities and project proposals that will promote tiger conservation in Northeast China.
  2. Team and Capacity Building: Take leadership in team and capacity building activities. Contribute to a positive, flexible and professional working environment.
  3. Communication, Collaboration and Partnership Development: Develop and maintain a constructive dialogue with stakeholders in Northeast China and beyond (government officials, NGOs, research institutions, donors, etc.); develop partnerships with national and local stakeholders for strategic collaboration to contribute to tiger, tiger prey, and tiger habitat conservation.
  4. Fundraising and Resource Mobilization: Lead resource mobilization activities to secure program implementation, e.g., work with WCS China and WCS New York staff to write concept notes and full donor proposals; develop and maintain constructive dialogues with donors; promote fundraising capacity building activities; explore co-funding opportunities for tiger protection.
  5. Reporting: Produce or contribute to progress reports, donor reports, annual reports, and other required documents for WCS and donors on schedule.
  6. Budget Management: Track expenses and provide regular financial reports on tiger project activities to the WCS China Finance Manager. Work with the WCS China Finance Manager to create financial reports to donors on schedule.
  7. Work as a team player within WCS China to promote institutional development, and to contribute to a constructive and professional working environment within the organization.
  8. Represent WCS in professional societies, attending meetings, workshops, and strategy sessions.

  Minimum Qualification required
  Ph.D. or equivalent experience in a field related to the conservation of biological diversity, plus at least five years experience working in a related field.
  Ability to speak and write fluently in Mandarin Chinese and English.
  Good diplomatic skills.
  Good communication skills.
  Socially adept and flexible.
  Good natural history knowledge.
  Committed to wildlife conservation.
  Physically fit to undertake frequent travel to remote and difficult regions.

  Additional skills (preferred but not required)
  Experience working with, or familiarity with, international NGOs.
  Experience in running education programs.
  Experience in training, especially in legislation and enforcement related issues.
