Summer Volunteers 2008 vacancies
国际竹藤组织2008暑假志愿者招聘
All these positions last for six weeks from mid July to late August 2008. Most are suitable for postgraduate students and recent graduates in Beijing, and to anyone else interested in spending a few weeks gaining experience at INBAR. INBAR provides a small daily volunteers allowance for these positions, and free lunch at INBAR. No other costs are covered. Find out more about volunteering at INBAR here.
To apply for any of these positions, please send your cv/resume to andrew@inbar.int. Please indicate clearly which positions you are applying for, and include a letter of application in English which should include why you are interested in the position and why you feel you are suitable for it. Selection and interviews will be conducted in early July in Beijing. Applications should be received by 9th July 2008. Only short-listed candidates will be contacted for interview.
1. Computer assistant (计算机助理)
INBAR’s annual summer volunteers scheme doubles the number of people at INBAR, and help is required by our systems specialist to support the enlarged systems requirements of the scheme. This is an essential role for the smooth running of “summer volunteers”, and offers an opportunity to gain experience in a small but demanding systems environment.
Duties - Assist the INBAR systems specialist with computer hardware and software maintenance and troubleshooting. Particularly, you will 1. Set up and manage the computers and devices for the summer volunteers programme, 2. Install windows and other application software, 3. Conduct system troubleshooting as required, 4. Help with data processing work, and production of online databases, 5. Help improve the "look" of the website and its attractiveness to users.
Qualifications - Proven experience of computer hardware and software, including common software packages, Windows Operating Systems, networks and devices. Experience of computer-based media and publications software, such as Flash, would be an advantage.
2. Chinese – English – Chinese web translator (中英翻译)
INBAR recently developed a new website that enables programmes and units to place their own information on the site. The site works in all four languages and INBAR is now seeking help to update the Chinese versions of the webpages. We are also running an international workshop on NTFPs in September for which translations are needed.
Duties –The web translator will be responsible for 1. Translating INBARs online information from English to Chinese, or from Chinese to English, including news and feature stories, and programme and unit page contents; 2. Translating and editing part of the training materials for September workshop and symposium.
Qualifications – Excellent English/Chinese and translation skills, ability to use basic software, highly responsible, devoted, perseverant, hard-working and honest personality.
3. Information assistant (信息处理助理)
INBAR has a wide range of stakeholders in many countries and our outreach to these people is essential for our continued growth. INBAR runs a number of important databases that enable us to keep track of our partners, and to provide to them and us useful information on the current state of the bamboo and rattan sectors.
Duties – Your task will be to update and improve the INBAR mailing list database, the photo database and the IKON database.
Qualifications - Good English, ability to use common computer software, including database software, perseverance and patience, accuracy and attention to detail.
4. Training assistant(培训班助理)
INBARs ever-increasijg training portfolio means we require more help with course development and management. Particularly there will be an international training workshop on Non-Timber Foerst Products development and an International Symposium on Integrated Sustainable Livelihood Development in Moutain Forest Areas respectively in September. Both are sponsored by the Chinese Government, and INBAR is responsible for announcing the workshops and inviting the international participants.
Duties – Under the guidance of INBARs Public Awareness Officer you will
· Assist in sending workshop announcements and application forms via INBAR’s mailing list and through other channels provided.
· Translate and edit parts of the training materials.
· Assist in receiving and sending correspondence (including: letters, emails, faxes, etc.) regarding invitations and applications for the workshops.
Qualifications –Excellent English and Chinese-English translation skills, Good skills in drafting letters in English;, Skillful in basic computer operation, such as using word, excel, adobe Photoshop, PowerPoint, etc., highly responsible, devoted, perseverant, hard-working and honest.
5. Membership development assistant (成员国发展助理)
INBAR has 34 member States so far, one of the strategic goals of INBAR is to enlarge INBAR’s membership to at least 50 countries by 2015, including more developed countries, which is also the main task of the membership unit.
Duties - To update and complete the website page in relation to the membership; To update the contact database in relation with member States; To search and collect policy and institutional information on developing new member States suitable for INBAR.
Qualifications –Native Spanish/French/English speaker preferred; Fluent spoken and written English; Good computer skills, including experience of making webpages preferred.
6. Board and Council assistant (理, 董事会助理)
INBAR will hold its Board and Council meetings in October 2008. The assistant is required to provide translation, administrative and logistic support for the meetings’ preparation.
Duties – To translate meeting documents between English and Chinese and to provide logisticical and administrative support for the meetings’ preparation
Qualifications –Experienced of translation between English and Chinese; Excellent spoken and written English; Experience of organizing events/meetings; Good computer skills; Bachelor degree or above
7. Bamboo and Rattan Yellow Pages assistant (竹藤黄页助理)
Bamboo and Rattan Yellow Pages is a source of information on bamboo and rattan products for buyers all over the world. But as new companies are formed, and old ones disappear, it needs constant updating. Its coverage is also limited, and we are seeking a volunteer to help update and enlarge the database, and help improve its searchability via the web.
Duties – Searching for bamboo and rattan companies in the world, inputting their data into the database, helping improve the searchability and accessibility of the database.
Qualifications – Good searching skills, excellent English language skills, good attention to detail, patience.
8. Bamboo biomass project assistant (竹子生物量项目助理)
Understanding bamboo biomass and productivity is a key component of planning production to meet demand, and has impacts on the environment too. INBARs knowledge of biomass and productivity is limited, and we are seeking a volunteer to find basic information on the subject in order that we can commence work to improve knowledge nad use of biomass and productivity.
Duties –Prepare a position report on bamboo biomass as renewable energy

Qualifications – Excellent English, good internet searching skills, perseverance and patience, accuracy.
9. Affiliates scheme reviewer (会员项目评估)
INBARs affiliates scheme needs to be reviewed in order that a new direction can be developed for it. The scheme was started many years ago, and provides free benefits to paid-up affiliates, but costs INBAR money and time. We need to find a reviewer to help us understand the current state of the scheme, what INBAR and existing affiliates want out of it, and how we coyuld develop it appropriately in the future.
Duties - review INBARs affiliates scheme in conjunction with stakeholders, produce a review report, and make recommendations based on your findings for the future of the scheme.
Qualifications – excellent English and Chinese, experience of conducting similar reviews, excellent report writing skills, attention to detail, good interpersonal skills, ability to interact with stakeholders from all over the world, perseverance.
10. Livelihoods and Economic Development (LED) programme assistant (生计和经济发展项目助理)
The Livelihoods and Economic Development programme is the largest at INBAR, but only has three staff based in Beijing, with many more in field projects. Management of the programme is complex, and we are looking for a volunteer to help us improve our management and reporting system within the programme, and to help with some specific pieces of work that help define new opportunities for the programme.
Duties - Help with a range of duties in the Livelihoods and Economic Development programme, including 1. Updating the online projects databases, 2. Developing the LED webpages and information system on the LED computer server. 3. Translating English to Chinese for the programme, 4. other miscellaneous work as needed.
Qualifications – Excellent English language abilities, well motivated, interest/experience in livelihoods development and poverty alleviation.
11. Global Rattan Programme assistant (全球藤资源项目助理)
INBAR recently established its Global Rattan Programme, and has committed to providing a desk review of policies as they erlate to rattan-based development in its member countries.
Duties – Search for information and produce a report on policies related to rattan-based development in selected member countries, including recommendations for what INBAR should do to help foster their improvement.
Qualifications – Excellent English language abilities, Freench desirable, interest/background in forestry/development, good attention to detail and hard working. Some experience of policy analysis would be very helpful.
12. Library assistant (图书馆助理)
INBAR has a small but well-stocked library of publications relating to bamboo and rattan, forestry and sustainable development. INBAR does not have staff with library cataloguing skills and relies on help from partner institutions to conduct cataloguing for us. INBAR has acquired many publications since our last cataloguing exercise in 2004, and we are now seeking a qualified volunteer to help catalogue these new acquisitions in the library system.
Duties – Code and catalogue books and other publications in INBAR library.
Qualifications – Excellent English language skills. Major in library management or related field. Proven practical experience of library cataloguing systems. |
