Background
UNIFEM established its project office in China in 1998 and provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies to foster gender equality and women¡¯s empowerment. A small but very busy office, UNIFEM offers its interns plenty of hands-on experience and the opportunity to learn about gender issues in China, the work of the UN, and development programming.
¡¡¡¡UNIFEM is seeking a talented Chinese Master¡¯s degree student, current or just recently graduated, who is looking for an internship opportunity with an international organization. UNIFEM stresses that this position is unpaid and full-time. Students may use this internship to fulfill an internship/work requirement for their school¡¯s Master¡¯s degree program. UNIFEM would be happy to complete any paperwork requirements for a school internship program.
Duties and responsibilities
Under the supervision of the UNIFEM Country Programme Manager, the student intern is responsible for:
1 Assisting in searching and gathering information on pertinent subject relating to the strategic goals and thematic focus of the organization, using Internet, Intranet, knowledge network/groups, and other means available;
2 Assisting operationally in UN Theme Group on Gender (UNTGG) activities, the China Gender Facility activities, and other UNIFEM project/programme activities;
3 Assisting in administrative work of the office including assisting in arranging meetings, receive visitors, places and screens telephone calls and responds to external requests for information;
4 Helping with organization of activities/projects sponsored by UNIFEM;
5 Assisting in maintaining a documentation center and filing system for UNIFEM;
6 Performing other tasks as may be assigned by the Country Programme Manager.
Qualifications
Currently a Masters Degree student, or recently graduated with Masters Degree in Gender Studies, International Development, Political Sciences, Social Sciences or related field
Basic knowledge of gender theory and gender issues in China
Some previous office work experience
Fluency in English and Chinese (Mandarin)
Excellent work habits and strong work ethic
Strong communication skills (writing, speaking)
Good working knowledge of office computer software (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.)
Preferably able to work full-time, Monday thru Friday, from September 2009 to February 2010
