The 2006 Future Conservationist Awards will be decided in mid-March. To apply for the 2007 Awards please check these pages in July. (For Conservation Follow-up and Conservation Leadership Award Applications please click here).

Grant Criteria
Applications should address three key areas: 1) development of team capabilities and skills; 2) practical conservation projects combining research and action; and 3) demonstrable long-term conservation benefits contributing to sustainable development. Criteria for each of these three areas are of two types: mandatory (no project will be considered for support unless it meets all these criteria) and desirable (projects meeting these criteria are more likely to be supported). The mandatory criteria are detailed below:

Team Elements:
Teams must:
Show clearly how the project will build the skills and capabilities of individual team members.
Show potential for leadership as good ambassadors for the work they are doing.
Demonstrate wide collaborative support, including the support of appropriate, experienced advisors.
Include only members less than 35 years of age with no more than two years professional experience
Include a minimum of three people.

Project Components:
Projects must:
Be at least three months but no more than one year in length.
Take place outside countries that have ratified the Convention on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD Countries: see www.oecd.org for a list).
Be feasible, with the ability and experience of participants suited to the methods, objectives, budget and time frame.
Address a recognised international biodiversity conservation priority at the species, site or habitat level. Work on a particular species will only be supported for species listed as Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN) or Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN international red list (www.redlist.org).
Clearly deliver appropriate outputs – a research report, education materials, or contribute to a critical conservation need, etc.
Be cost effective and show good value for the money.
Ensuring Sustainability:
Projects must:
Show potential for follow-up work and demonstrate long-term benefits, with outputs that can be used for ongoing local conservation efforts.
Demonstrate a strong collaborative link with local or national institutions such as NGOs, universities and/or relevant governmental organizations.
Actively engage and involve local communities.
Please note the following restrictions before submitting your proposal- WE DO NOT PROVIDE FUNDING FOR THE FOLLOWING:
Conference attendance
Tuition fees or scholarships
Salaries
Costly laboratory analyses or gene storage
Captive breeding projects
High school level expeditions
Projects that are specifically for PhD research or Master’s dissertations will not be supported
Employees from any of the BPCP partner organizations are not eligible to apply
Funding requested from the BPCP should form a significant component of the project’s total financial requirement. These awards are not designed to make minor contributions to very large projects better served by other funding agencies.

We encourage real initiative and do not support teams joining pre-organised, existing projects developed by established organisations that are likely to proceed with or without BPCP funding.

There will be $250,000 worth of funding available for the winning projects in 2006. (Conservation Follow-up and Conservation Leadership Award grants will amount to a further $225,000).

Training is provided on project planning, communications and conservation education, fieldwork techniques, facilitation and risk assessment. The training venue alternates between the UK and the US each year.

The award winners for the 2005 awards were announced at a ceremony in Washington DC on June 24th. 390 applications were received this year. With the help of a network of 400 conservation professionals, they were cut to a shortlist of 68 and finally a winner list of 28. Details of the award winning projects are available on the 'Latest award winners' page.
