From 1993 to 2007, the WCS Research Fellowship Program (RFP) supported the conservation research and field work of more than 300 conservationists in an effort to help train the next generation of conservation practitioners. WCS’s investment in each RFP grant was leveraged by further financial commitments from the awardees’ universities and/or national institutions. Most RFP recipients have advanced to positions in NGOs, academic institutions, and government ministries worldwide, creating an international network of conservation professionals dedicated to saving wildlife and wild places.
In 2010, the WCS Institute re-established the RFP to build on this effective model of capacity building. The new RFP will focus on supporting projects that directly address WCS conservation priorities and help further our understanding of WCS priority species, land/seascapes, and/or challenges. RFP projects will include opportunities to work on issues being addressed by the Global Program, the Global Health Program, and the Living Institutions. At the same time, the RFP grants will continue to provide much-needed support for the training of conservation practitioners in developing countries.
The RFP Selection Committee, chaired by the Institute and representing the Regional, Species, and Challenges teams, will guide the applicants, match applications with WCS needs, and make the final selection of awards. We invite you to share this opportunity with any conservation practitioners associated with your projects who might be interested in learning more. The application deadline is January 5, 2011. Complete eligibility requirements are available at http://programs.wcs.org/grants. Please email any questions to fellowship@wcs.org.
