October 13 China Made Progress in Saving Energy and Reducing Emissions in the First Half of This Year
This year is the key year of the "11th Five-Year Plan" energy-binding emission reduction targets. In the first half of the year, the national economy developed stably. In the meantime, it also made positive progress in energy conservation and emission reduction.
Energy consumption and emissions of major pollutants per unit GDP continued declining.Statistics shows in the last two quarters, the national energy consumption increased 7.7%, and energy consumption per unit GDP declined 2.62 %, 1.08 % less than last year.
National Development and Reform Commission analysis the reasons for energy consumption and pollutant emissions declination in per unit GDP.First, energy-intensive sectors fell back rapidly. Secondly, the output of the major energy-consuming products decreased. Thanks to the increasing government efforts, China made positive progress in energy conservation and emission reduction.

October 13 The Wetland International Conference Will Be Held In Qin Lake
From October 19-20, the representatives from five provinces, municipality in the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River basin and World Wide Fund will get together in the Qin Lake Wetland Park in Jiangyan.An annual international conference, the 2008 Wetland protection in the middle and lower reaches of Changjiang River, theme as "protect the wetland, cope with global climate change" will be held then.
Zhen Liu, the director of Qin Lake scenic spot management committee, said that the meeting would focus on "acknowledgment of global climate change, the ecosystem of Yangtze River's response and adaption to climate change, changes of wetland biodiversity, the importance of the wetland to the global climate change, and the establishment of the network to protect the Middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River.”

On October 31st, British and Chinese experts will hold a seminar on the research about the effect of climate change on biodiversity in Sichuan during the whole year, especially how the panda habitants and the local economy were influenced.From November 3 to 4, British prince Andrew, as a special representative of British international trade and investment Council, will negotiate with Sichuan government leaders on the topics of reconstruction in the disaster areas. October 15 Banna Garden Built Closed CO2 Houses Recently, the closed carbon dioxide growth houses, built by the Biological Invasion Program of Banna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Department of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Ailan Mountain Ecological Station together, passed the final acceptance smoothly, and were put into use.The chamber was built for the control experiment research.The research is aiming to examine the evolution of invasive plant under the global climate changes, to develop appropriate measures limiting the spread of invasion scientifically, and to provide guidance for the restoration of ecosystems. Also, it provides a great research platform for control experiment in Ailao Shan. http://www.cas.ac.cn/html/Dir/2008/10/15/16/19/52.htm October 16 Latest Report: Climate Change Severely Influences Chinese Food Production (Beijing Youth Network) As World Grain Day ( October 16th ) arrives, 17 experts from Chinese Agriculture Academy of Science, Chinese Climate Change think tanks, the UN Intergovernmental Climate Change Commission, Shengyang Agriculture University and Inner Mongolia Agriculture University cooperatively compiled a report on Climate Change and Chinese Food Security, predicting that after 20 years, climate change will lead to lack of food in China.According to the present tendency, 2.5-3 centigrade degree rising of the national average temperature per year caused the continual decrease of three staple crops (rice, wheat, corn) output. Furthermore, due to the decline of agricultural water and cultivable land, the total food production level will drop 14%-23% from today's level.
