The 2009 Global Development Awards and Medals Competition
TheGlobal Development Network (GDN) is now accepting submissions for itsannual competition for development research proposals/papers anddevelopment projects. Researchers and NGOs from developing andtransition countries are invited to participate in the competition. Thecompetition is generously funded by the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan and other donors.
Thecompetition focuses on key issues such as globalization, regionalintegration, climate change and international migration against thebackdrop of the current global economic and financial crisis, thepolitical and economic repercussions of which can already be feltacross countries and regions. The impact of these crises on thearchitecture of developing countries cannot be understated. They haveprompted many to challenge globalization and they are also likely tohasten the structural shift in global economic power from Westerncountries to emerging markets.
Prizes
The finalistswill win cash prizes and a round-trip air fare with all boarding andlodging expenses paid to travel to the GDN Annual Conference where theywill present their proposals/papers and showcase an interestingon-project before an eminent jury for the final round. This year thefinal selection will be held in Prague, Czech Republic. The Awards arefunded by the Government of Japan and the Medals are funded byprestigious donors.

- Globalization, Regulation and Development
- International Migration: Crossing Borders, Changing Lives?
- Regional Integration- Convergence Big Time, or, an Opportunity Wasted?
Note:Those applying to the competition under the Japanese Award forOutstanding Research on Development and for the Japanese Award for theMost Innovative Development Project category need to apply on thetemplate provided, while the ‘Medals for Research on Development’ mayapply online as per the guidelines provided below.
Deadline:
August 24, 2009 for the Japanese Award for the Most Innovative Development Project
September 30, 2009, for the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development and Medals for Research on Development
The competition is open to researchers from developing & transition countries.
Submissions will be accepted under the following three categories:
Category 1: Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development
Eligibility:
- Applicants who have outstanding new research proposals that provides a new dimension to research on any of the three topics listed above
- Citizensand permanent residents of developing and transition countries or whoare temporarily based in a developed country for not more than fiveyears
- Staff of bilateral/multilateral agencies are not eligible to apply.
Prizes: First Prize: US $30,000; Second Prize: US $5,000.GDN will sponsor finalists to attend the Eleventh Annual GlobalDevelopment Conference, Prague, Czech Republic from January 16-18, 2010and present their proposals.
Age Limit: 45 years

Category 2: Medals for Research on Development
Eligibility:
- Applicants who have completed research papers on any of the three topics
- Citizensand permanent residents of developing and transition countries or whoare temporarily based in a developed country for not more than fiveyears
- Staff of bilateral/multilateral agencies are not eligible to apply.
Prizes: First Prize: US $10,000; Second prize: US $5,000in each of the three topics mentioned above. GDN will sponsor finaliststo attend the Eleventh Annual Global Development Conference, Prague,Czech Republic from January 16-18, 2010 and present their papers.
Age Limit: 45 years

Category 3: Japanese Award for the Most Innovative Development Project
Eligibility:
- Proposals of ongoing development projects that have the potential to create the maximum impact in local communities
- Developmentprojects managed by an institution with headquarters in Africa, Asia,Middle East, Latin America, Caribbean, Pacific Islands or transitioneconomies of Europe and Central Asia. Projects should have beenimplemented before December 31, 2007.
- Participants from previous years (except finalists) may apply but must submit updated proposals.
Prizes: First Prize: US $30,000; Second Prize: US$ 5,000.GDN will sponsor finalists to attend the Eleventh Annual GlobalDevelopment Conference, Prague, Czech Republic from January 16-18, 2010and present their projects.
