We like to look after those who look after others and are committed to supporting small, grassroots charities, non-violent direct action groups and other good causes working in the following areas:-
- Environment / conservation
- Animal protection
- Human rights (including poverty alleviation)
Although these are our main areas of focus, any group, irrespective of their geographical location, field of expertise or how the organisation is registered, will be considered providing they:-
- Are not involved in any way with animal testing or any other practices harmful to animals;
- Are committed to non-violent action if a direct action group;
- Are environmentally responsible;
- Are respectful of human rights.
Frequently asked questions
Which organisations do you fund?
The majority of our funding is allocated to small, grassroots groups as they are usually best placed to make a real difference with limited resources and often struggle to find funding. Please note that almost all the groups we fund have annual incomes of less than £250,000 and most are substantially smaller than this.
We believe we can make the most impact by funding projects that other funders won't, therefore we give priority to less popular causes which are more difficult to raise funds for. The most popular causes tend to be health charities (medical research, hospices etc), religious causes, children and young people; so these aren't a priority for us.
We support non-violent direct action because we feel it plays an important part in bringing about positive social change. Non-violent direct action includes protests and demonstrations, non-cooperation and other non-violent interventions. We will only consider supporting non-violent direct actions, i.e. those which have no intention of physically harming others or threatening to do so.
My organisation is not a registered charity, does that matter?
No, we fund all types of organisations, it is not necessary to be a registered charity.
What can I apply for funding for?
We're pretty open minded but we particularly look for projects that create change and aim to get to the route of the problem. We also prefer to fund project costs rather than core costs. We occasionally fund salaries, but since many of the groups we support are run by volunteers we will only do this when it is clear that a paid employee is absolutely necessary.
Do you fund projects outside the UK?
Yes, we fund projects all around the world.
How much can I apply for?
Our support ranges from a few hundred pounds to a maximum of £10,000 per project, although we reserve the right to adjust these amounts depending on the project. If the total cost of your project is above this you're welcome to apply for part funding of the project. Bear in mind that the average grant is around £3,000.
How do I apply for a grant from Charity Pot?
To apply for a Charity Pot grant you will need to complete a funding application form. To request an application form, please email charitypot@lush.co.uk This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with the subject "application form request". In your email please give a brief description of your organisation and the project you'd like funding for (just a couple of paragraphs). Please ensure you have read the guidelines carefully before deciding whether to apply.
When will I know if my application was successful?
We aim to let you know within 6 weeks.
Can I apply for a second grant?
Yes. We give repeat grants, this wholly depends on funds available and the success of the first project.
If my application is unsuccessful, can I apply again?
This depends on the reason why your application was turned down.
Will you sponsor my event?
We'd be happy to consider making a financial contribution towards your event if it falls in to one of our priority areas, but we don't sponsor events.
Will you sponsor me to climb Kilimanjaro for charity?
We prefer to give funds to organisations directly for a specific project rather than sponsoring fundraising activities so if you're raising funds for an organisation that meets our criteria, please ask them to get in touch.
How can I request some Lush products for my charity?
Please visit our product donations page.
Will you make a donation towards my expedition/ volunteering trip?
We prefer to give funds directly to organisations so if you're working or volunteering with an organisation that meets our criteria, please let us know.
