之后我们邀请了一家服装公司Langoors(该公司旨在使用有机材料代替化学材料制作服装)展示公司产品。

Team leaders: Snigdha Pandey
Earned Points in the Race: 510

Report: Number of people actively involved in the GPR campus organising team: 15
Number of people engaged through GPR projects/activities: 200

Ever since we were introduced to the Great Power Race (GPR), we have had a number of eager students willing to help our college in the race, and more importantly, make our college a greener one.

We generated interest by organising a ‘sign up’ where we found a rather obliging team. We publicised the event by forming the words ‘Great Power Race’ by asking girls to lie down in our grassy quadrangle.  A dance further roused the interest and all were soon enlightened by a campus speech on ‘sustainable living’.

Some of the initial innovative steps taken by our GPR team included organising a throw ball match between teachers (acting as developed countries) and students (the underdeveloped countries), that not only attracted attention but also educated many (teachers included) on our efforts and the GPR. A ‘no cosmetic day’ was observed where the girls, after a ‘check up’, were advised by the team to change over to more eco friendly products. Posters all over the college reminded people to conserve water. With a major festival fast approaching (Ganesha Chaturthi), we encouraged the use of unpainted clay idols of Ganesha to help save the environment (and thereby reduce pollution caused by the chemical paints used to decorate them).  We invited a clothing company, Langoors (which makes clothes from organic rather than chemical dyes) to showcase their products. This way, the girls found alternatives to clothing without harming the environment. We also spread awareness about using leaf plates in our canteen rather than polystyrene ones.

As the month drew to a close, we came out with the first issue of our environmental, GPR magazine,‘Climate Crusaders’ that covered our activities for the month.

As the race intensified, we started doing more projects concerning change rather than just awareness. With our previously installed waste management plant in place, we made plans to make our college zero waste soon.

Next, we went about ascertaining the biodiversity present on the campus. We planted trees in an effort to attract more species of animals to our campus. By allocating a little plot of land to us, the college let us set up our own garden where we could grow food on our campus. We are currently growing Tomatoes, Aubergines, Drumsticks, Leafy vegetables, Chillies and Gourds, and are using a large amount of manure generated by our zero waste plant on the farm. We also have an indigenous tree garden where we have planted saplings of Mango, Guava, Chikoo, Lemon, Pomegranate, Papaya, Tulasi and sapota.

In an effort to reduce pollution, carbon footprint (and electricity bills), we replaced all the incandescent bulbs in the college with CFLs.

Thus, we believe that we have taken the right steps towards making our college a greener one, and GPR has given us a great platform to do so. Our families and friends have also benefitted greatly from the race. The race may end here, but certainly not our efforts.
