The Human Development Report (HDR) is probably the most famous, and most widely read document published by the United Nations. Each year, it grapples with one of the most challenging issues facing the global human family. This year, it tackles the one thing that every human being needs just to stay alive: clean, safe water. Human beings cannot live more than a few days without it and yet, for many millions in the global family, finding and making water safe to drink is a daily struggle. The report is fascinating, but it will not be widely read by young people because its language is so complicated, This is why the UN is inviting the young people of Peace Child's world network to create a short summary of it.
Click here for the call for Contributions: you will find the key points of the report summarised in a couple of pages and you will be asked to contribute stories, paintings, cartoons and poems that illustrate these key points from your own experience in your own country. All contributors will receive a certificate acknowledging their participation in this important UN Project signed by the appropriate UN officer and the President of Peace Child International. Contributions will be graded in four categories:
Platinum Certificate - the very best contributions received as assessed by the UN and PCI staff officers
Gold Certificate - very good contributions received as assessed by the UN and PCI staff officers
Silver Certificate - satisfactory contributions received as assessed by the UN and PCI staff officers
Bronze Certificate - all other contributions received as assessed by the UN and PCI staff officers
Each certificate will list: the Name of the contributor, the Name of his/her University, School or College and the name of his/her Teacher or Tutor; (Teachers and Tutors who organise contributions from their whole class will also receive a certificate.)
Though the creation of this booklet is in no way a competition, there will be at least FIVE special prizes of a 2-week, all expenses paid trip to the UK to help in the final preparation of the booklet. The young people selected will be in the following categories:
The best poem in English, French or Spanish on a theme that relates to one of the Key Messages of the booklet;
The best personal story or piece of creative writing in English, French or Spanish on a theme that relates to one of the Key Messages of the booklet;
The best cartoon / drawing on a theme that relates to one of the Key Messages of the booklet;
The Cover and Title for the booklet - that captures the key messages of the Human Development Report; this can be a painting, a photograph you have taken yourself, a drawing or a piece of graphic design created on a computer.
The Back Cover for the book: this will take the form of a Poster or an advertisement for the key messages of the Human Development Report. It should include a catchy slogan which sums up your feelings about - and the key messages of the Report along with a linked painting, a photo- graph you have taken yourself, a drawing or a piece of graphic design created on a computer. |
