Background

Biodiversity and cultural diversity are intimately linked throughout human history. Today sustainable management of biodiversity is a critical global issue as biodiversity resources continue to decline and climate change accelerates. Today the world is facing loss of biodiversity, degradation of biodiversity resources and challenges in biodiversity conservation in many countries. At the same time, traditional knowledge – the cultural expression of biodiversity is disappearing rapidly in many developing countries. Understanding, recognizing, respecting and protecting biodiversity-related traditional knowledge and culture is urgently needed to save the world’s biodiversity resources as well as maintain the environmental services that ecosystems provides for all on the planet.

Biocultural diversity is not only seen as an important part of world heritage but also important basis for modern development. In Asia, biocultural diversity is notable component of human civilization comparing from forest culture, agro-culture, medical culture, food culture, spiritual culture to many other folk cultures that were established and developed on the basis of human interactions with bio-systems and environment through human history. This century will surely see accelerated globalization and deeper expansion of the market economy into rural communities. Our challenge is to learn how to develop sustainable societies in our Asian Cradle of Biocultures including maintaining the spiritual respects for nature such as must underlie technical management practices. Sustainable biological diversity system and production system should be an urgent agenda issue in all countries in Asia and better understanding of biodiversity related traditional knowledge and local culture in our societies will have a great role to play in modern development, contributing to biodiversity conservation and biodiversity-based economy development.

This is the first time to organize as such subject symposium in Yunnan of China. As BioCultural Diversity is a New, Interdisciplinary and Cross-cutting field for research and conservation, considering the wide-scope of symposium subject and richness of biocultural components, the symposium will attempt to have a geographical focus on Asia, in particular the Himalayas and Mekong Region for the symposium to he held in Kunming and Xishuangbanna, Yunnan of China.

Objectives
