The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in conjunction with the Centre for Environment Education (CEE), India, is hosting the second TUNZA International Youth Conference in Bangalore, India from 12th to 18th of October 2005. The Conference is one of the key activities under UNEP's TUNZA long-term strategy for engaging and involving young people in environmental activities and in the work of UNEP.
About 150 youth aged 15-24 years will come from all over the world to discuss their role in environmental decision-making. The main theme of the conference is \"The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and cooperation among youth organizations\", The Conference will mainly focus on the following MDG goals: One, to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, three, to promote gender equality and empower women, and seven, to ensure environmental sustainability.
The Conference will also review the progress of the individual commitments made by the participants of the 2005 Global Youth Retreat dubbed \" The Road to Bangalore\". It will culminate in the development of individual commitments by each participant on how to work on and contribute to the discussed MDGs. To this end, a number of workshops, plenary sessions, focused group discussions, field trips as well as panel discussions will take place. Furthermore, a new TUNZA Youth Advisory Council with two advisors for each of the six UNEP regions and two advisors representing indigenous youth organizations will be elected by the participants.
The TUNZA conference 2005 follows in the footsteps of the 2003 TUNZA conference in Dubna, Russia. Before the adoption of the TUNZA strategy by the UNEP Governing Council in 2003, UNEP had been organizing Global Youth Forums for young people from 15 to 24 years since 1986. These gatherings of environmentally active youth are an important element in realizing the \"vision of the organization to foster a generation of environmentally conscious citizens who will better influence decision-making processes and act responsibly to create a sustainable world\".
The Tunza Youth Advisor's (two from every UNEP Region: Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, West Asia) have been instrumental in putting together the Conference programme and in advising the organizer on venue, accommodation, travel logistics and meals.
Sponsoring for the 2005 Conference is generously provided by Bayer AG of Leverkusen, Germany. UNEP and Bayer have entered into a cooperation to promote environmental activities for young people. The joint activities regarding youth and environment are based upon UNEP's TUNZA strategy and Bayer AG's Global Bayer Programme for Youth Environmental education. Bayer contributes to the TUNZA conference by sponsoring the travel budget for the international participants.
The Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in Ahmedabad was established in 1984 as an affiliate of the Nehru Foundation for Development (NFD) and is supported by the Indian Government's Ministry of Environment and Forests. The Centre's mission is awareness-creation and education on environmental issues, aiming at a sustainable relationship between mankind and nature, by creating and disseminating knowledge. To this end, CEE not only creates expertise in the field of environmental education, but also develops innovative programmes and educational materials, testing them for validity and effectiveness. The CEE provides essential on-site support for the conference. The Government of India has offered tremendous support to CEE in the organization and funding of the Conference.
The South Asia Youth Environment Network (SAYEN) is a youth network, set up in July 2001, supported by the UNEP Asia and the Pacific. The vision of the network is \"Sustainable Development in South Asia\". The Centre for Environment Education hosts the Secretariat for the network. One or two organizations in each of the South Asian countries have been identified as the National Focal Point (NFP) for the network. The number of SAYEN members in each country ranges from 20 to 100 people, with over 200 organizations in the region as SAYEN members. The NFP organizations facilitate SAYEN's activities in their respective countries. The CEE is also the NFP for India. SAYEN will is closely involved in the preparation of the conference, in particular by promoting the TUNZA conference through the SAYEN website. |
