WWF China Programme Office
Position Description
Position : Species Programme Director
Reports to:Conservation Director
Supervises: Species programme staff in Beijing; field staff as directed by Conservation Director.
Location :Beijing

Main Responsibility:
Develop and implement a Species Programme Strategy for WWF China, incorporating the global Species Programme targets and other priorities identified in China.

Major Functions:

Coordinate the development and implementation (including monitoring, analysis, evaluation and reporting) of a portfolio of projects and activities that make up the WWF Giant Panda Strategic Action Plan.
Coordinate the development and implementation (in collaboration with TRAFFIC East Asia) of a portfolio of campaign and lobbying activities necessary to reduce pressure on wild species from China’s wildlife trade.
Oversee and guarantee quality of WWF China’s Conservation Small Grants Fund.
Assist in the development of activities to conserve nationally- or ecoregionally-identified priority species in China.
Provide technical, communications and marketing support necessary for the funding and implementation of these projects and activities.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and implement a Species programme strategy for WWF China. Insure that this strategy supports global Species Targets and WWF China Country Strategy.
Guide the development, review and approval of proposals, and subsequently provide programmatic oversight in the implementation, monitoring and reporting of a portfolio of projects and activities towards achievement of the goals and targets as envisaged WWF Strategic Action Plan (2004-2010) for the conservation of the Giant Panda.
Develop, implement and review annual work plans for carrying out the WWF Strategic Action Plan (2004-2010) for the conservation of the Giant Panda in close coordination with the Director, WWF International Species Programme;
Develop and maintain communication linkages between project executants, relevant NOs/POs, scientists and experts, and other relevant entities to facilitate consultation, information exchange and knowledge sharing;
Monitor the progress of projects and activities against the goals and targets of the Strategic Action Plan, and prepare overview and summary reports and associated information accordingly for the WWF International Regional and Species Programmes;
Network with programme, policy and communications staff within WWF (including other WWF Species Action Plan Coordinators) and key external partners (e.g. TRAFFIC, IUCN, Wildlife Conservation Society, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Government Aid Agencies) to increase synergy and linkages between WWF's giant panda conservation work and other conservation efforts, assimilate useful lessons from other programmes/action plans and vice versa, and garner necessary technical and funding support;
Develop a comprehensive range of tools and materials for information, communications and campaigning on WWF's giant panda conservation activities to increase success, public and professional support and awareness, and to aid fund-raising;
Develop and maintain a database of all WWF projects and activities related to giant panda conservation, and produce and disseminate an overview and analysis report of progress and funding/expenditure on an annual basis;
Organize a review and planning workshop every second or third year of the implementation of the Strategic Action Plan to assess progress of the projects and activities, exchange information and experiences, revisit and fine-tune objectives, priorities and implementation as necessary, and accordingly determine future directions;
Organize, and participate in (if appropriate), evaluations of landscape-specific projects as well as the WWF giant panda conservation programme as a whole;
Keep abreast with developments in the field of giant panda conservation, and alert the Network on emerging issues and trends.
Supervise the WWF China Conservation Small Grants Fund, and insure that it serves as an effective mechanism to support protection of priority species and platform to promote biodiversity conservation.
Work in collaboration with relevant parties (e.g. TRAFFIC, Global Species Programme, other NGOs, other WWF offices) to develop and implement activities to promote sustainable trade wildlife trade in China.
Hire and manage Species programme staff. Provide them with regular feedback and guidance, as well as opportunities for training and professional development.
Actively participate in the WWF China Conservation Programme Team.
Participate in Yangtze Steering Committee. Work to maximize synergies between Species and other programme activities to help insure achievement of Yangtze Programme Targets.
Represent WWF China in internal and external meetings and events relevant to the Species programme or wildlife conservation.
Assist in the development of activities to conserve nationally- or ecoregionally-identified priority species in China. Provide advice and support on wildlife-related issues for other programmes within WWF China

Working Relationships:
Internal: frequent contact with WWF Beijing office staff, Species programme staff, Conservation Director; regular contact with global Species Programme team, CPO Communications, Finance and Administration staff; occasional contact with staff of other WWF offices.
External: with TRAFFIC, IUCN, Wildlife Conservation Society, Flora and Fauna International, US Fish & Wildlife Service, Government Aid Agencies, other key institutional partners, and independent experts to enlist technical and financial assistance, and to exchange information and experience.

Qualifications Required
Knowledge: A Master's degree in conservation science or a related discipline, preferably with giant panda conservation experience or with conservation experience in the giant panda range. A sound understanding of species-related conservation issues in general, and knowledge of relevant international conventions such as CBD and CITES.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years relevant work experience, first hand experience of giant panda conservation in the field a distinct advantage. International conservation experience an asset, and hands-on experience in programme planning, project management and monitoring will be valuable.
Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work with people of diverse cultures essential. Strong written and oral communication skills in English and Chinese. Experience in working with teams and coordinating team work will be essential, as well as building partnerships outside WWF. Creative, strategic personality in order to develop a plan for nature conservation in which partnerships with other people and organizations play an important role. Good working knowledge of computer and familiarity with the use of electronic media.
