Our new NGO, China Schools Foundation, builds on the success of a nonprofit company that I founded in Hong Kong in 2000, The Hong Kong Academy Educational Foundation Ltd. The pre-K to grade 8 school opened by the Foundation has become a well-regarded model of progressive education. The new organizational effort, which calls on the skills and non-profit experience of several Hong Kong business people, is dedicated to the support and improvement of rural education and communities throughout China. Two initial projects are now in progress - one in rural Yunnan and a larger, countywide project in Shaanxi. Based upon a "whole-school" approach, we are collaborating with government and school leadership to improve infrastructure, supply hands-on learning materials, provide teacher professional development, and implement health programs. We believe that these pilot projects will set the stage for a very rapid expansion into remote and needy rural areas. To have the maximum possible impact on educational reform, we look forward to sharing our best practices, resources and teaching materials with other educational NGOs active in China.
The Shaanxi program, which is funded by a local, foreign-owned company, involves work in six rural primary schools. We have set up an office in Xi'an that, in at least the near term, will serve as headquarters for activities throughout China. We are seeking a full-time associate to do administrative work and as much substantive fieldwork as their interest, experience and skill dictates. Administrative work includes translation (both oral and written) and follow-up communication with schools, officials, and suppliers, as well as with academics who already are cooperating with us in program development. Educational fieldwork could/would include program development and assessment; curriculum development; target school selection; teacher training; etc. Research work regarding educational policy, NGO initiatives, prospective partners, and the like would be welcome. As may be apparent from the foregoing, there is room for more than one associate in this growing organization!
Personal qualities essential to success in this work are: (a) a commitment to and passion for social welfare programs; (b) independence, resourcefulness and creativity; (3) good interpersonal skills; and (4) a high degree of self-motivation. For someone with these qualities, a demonstrated interest or experience in early education, social welfare work, and/or NGO administration will assure that this will be a most rewarding experience and growth opportunity. You will be making a difference!
Please contact me at benfrankel@netvigator.com. A statement of your particular interests and experience along with a CV would be helpful. Also, please indicate your availability. This will be a salaried position, but inquiries regarding volunteer work or internships are welcome. |
