Bryant signs agreement with CUG

Agreement will launch joint academic programs.
Smithfield, R.I. (May 18, 2005) - On Friday, May 20, Ronald K. Machtley, president of Bryant University, and the Bryant Board of Trustees, met with Mr. Zhang Jingao, president of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), and a four-member delegation. They conferred about final details for an agreement between the two universities, which calls for student and faculty exchanges, and collaboration to create a joint graduate program on environmental management studies.

Presidents Machtley and Zhang then signed a formal agreement, an expansion of a previous joint agreement signed on June 27, 2004, when president Machtley visited China.

"The signing of this agreement marks a historic occasion for Bryant University," said president Machtley. "China is a critical player in the global economy, and Bryant intends to foster academic and business ties between our countries. This partnership will provide new and exciting opportunities for our students and faculty to take part in programs in China as well as for Chinese faculty and students to come to Bryant."

The partnership between Bryant and China University of Geosciences, which falls under the auspices of Bryant's newly-established U.S. - China Institute, promotes Bryant's commitment to enhance academic and business programs with Chinese academic institutions and encourages trade between U.S. companies and China.

To commemorate this agreement, Chinese delegation presented a unique gift to Bryant: a new sign for the U.S. - China Institute, crafted in native materials. The sign was presented to Bryant at the signing of the joint agreement, and will be installed at The John H. Chafee Center for International Business at Bryant, which houses the U.S. - China Institute.

On Saturday, May 21, president Zhang receives an honorary degree at Bryant's 142nd Undergraduate Commencement.

布莱恩特大学与地大签定合作协议

当地时间5月20日，布莱恩特大学校长罗兰德·Ｋ·麦克利先生，布莱恩特大学董事会见了中国地质大学（武汉）校长及其四人代表团，商讨协议的最后细节。协议将推动两校师生交流，合作发展环境管理研究。

基于2004年6月24日麦克利校长访问中国地质大学时签署的协议，张锦高校长和麦克利校长签署了正式合同。

“该项协议标志着布赖恩特大学的一个历史时刻”， 麦克利校长说，“中国在全球经济中扮演重要角色，布莱恩特大学有意于发展两国间的学术经济交流。这种合作将会为我校师生提供机会去中国学习研究，同样也会提供机会给中国师生来布莱恩特。”

中国地质大学与布莱恩特大学的合作主要由布莱恩特大学新建的美中研究所展开。合作将会加强布莱恩特大学与中国高等院校的学术和经济交流，促进中美之间的贸易往来。

协议签署会上，中国代表团向布莱恩特大学赠送了一件独特的礼物：手工精心制作的中美研究所的标牌。标牌将被挂在布赖恩特大学的国际商学院，中美研究所的所在地。

5月21日星期六，在2005届毕业典礼上张校长接受了布赖恩特大学荣誉博士学位。
