The Youth Exchange for Trade Justice
A platform for young people to share local and national experiences on the impact of the international trading system in the context of the 6th WTO Ministerial.
8th-11th December 2005, Hong Kong
Introduction
The Youth Exchange for Trade Justice is designed to bring together young people working on trade-related issues at a local and national level to exchange viewpoints on the impact of the international trading system on local communities from their countries perspective and experience. The participants will engage in a facilitated peer-to-peer learning program and will also hear from international guest speakers about different local, national and international strategies to further the cause of trade justice. The program will include critical reflection on action plans and activities participants have already engaged in and focus on planning further activities beyond the Ministerial.
The Youth Exchange is hosted by Oxfam Hong Kong with the support of the Oxfam International Youth Parliament.
Participants
The Exchange program is aimed at young people who are working in trade-related campaigning or community programs at a local or national level and whose work would be enhanced by greater linkages with international trade advocacy initiatives.
Participants will include members of the Oxfam Hong Kong Youth Campaign Partners, and members of the Oxfam International Youth Parliament Trade Justice Project. The Trade Justice Project provides targeted training in trade campaigning and human rights advocacy, and supports participants to implement action plans on trade issues relevant to their home countries.
Key activities:
1. Participants will have an opportunity to learn from each other about different strategies for addressing poverty and trade issues including sharing and learning from their own work and action plans, as well as the contribution of young people to the trade justice movement.
2. Participants will develop a further understanding of the WTO impacts and processes
3. Participants will hear from international speakers and guests about the role of the civil society movement around trade and future scenarios for the international trading system beyond the 6th WTO Ministerial in Hong Kong.
4. Participants will participate in Oxfam’s campaign activities on the WTO Ministerial, and will work together to plan action and involvement at the 6th WTO Ministerial and beyond
5. Participants will be able to share their views on the impacts of trade with the wider HK community through local interactions and media events.
