The 40th Annual Meeting of ADB’s Board of Governors will take place in early May 2007 in Kyoto, Japan. ADB and ROAD, a network of Japanese university students, are organizing special activities leading up to the Annual Meeting to give young adults from the Asia-Pasific region a unique opportunity to air their views on sustainable development at this significant milestone in ADB’s history.
The first activity is the Asia and Pacific Student Essay Competition. University students from around the region are invited to submit an essay on one of three broad topics. Submissions are being accepted between 1 September and 31 October 2006. A jury of development experts will choose 25 winning essays, whose authors will be invited to Kyoto in March 2007 to participate in the week-long Asian and Pacific Youth Forum on Sustainable Development. The essay competition will serve as a means to select the participants to the Youth Forum and related activities.
The Youth Forum will provide the winning essayists the chance to deliberate on issues such as economic growth, environmental conservation, human resource development, industry and infrastructure. The Youth Forum will conclude with the adoption of a Youth Statement on Sustainable Development, which will be presented by ROAD representatives at the ADB Annual Meeting.
The 25 winning essays will be assembled, published, and widely disseminated in order to amplify the voices of the region’s students.
