New Opportunities

The Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society announces a fellowship opportunity for spring 2007. The program provides leadership training through applied research and professional mentorships for young scholar-practitioners in the nonprofit sector. The research topic for the program is community foundations. Visit the Center’s website at www.philanthropy.org and click on “International Fellows Program” for qualifications and application guidelines.

The Human Rights Advocates Program is designed for experienced lawyers, journalists, teachers, social workers, community organizers, and activists working with non-governmental organizations in labor rights, migration, health, social exclusion, environmental justice, and corporate social accountability. The 2007 HRAP program begins mid-August and runs until mid December. Refer to the webpage: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/humanrights/training/adv/hradv_pgm.htm for application and program details.

The seed funding facility of Wetlands International provides funds to support project development and local partnerships strengthening. Specifically, the group likes to support initiatives that highlight how well-managed wetlands help sustain the livelihoods and security of wetland-related communities. Criteria and guidelines for applications are available at www.wetlands.org/WPRP. The submission deadline is October 15, 2006.

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration is accepting applications for the International Coral Grant Program, which funds international coral reef projects. The deadline is November 13, 2006. For details visit: www.noaa.gov .

The Equator Initiative is seeking nominations of community-based projects that demonstrate extraordinary achievement in reducing poverty through the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the equatorial belt. Five projects will receive international recognition and $30,000 each. Deadline for nominations is October 31, 2006. For details on the Equator Prize visit: www.equatorinitiative.org.

The Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is a UK-based charity offering awards to outstanding nature conservation leaders from around the world. The Fund recognizes some of the world's most dynamic conservationists and supports projects founded on good science, community involvement and pragmatism. They seek charismatic and passionate individuals who are a voice for environmental sustainability and wildlife conservation in their own countries. The deadline for the next Whitley Awards is Tuesday 31st October 2006 for the completed application form and three references. The application form for the Whitley Awards 2007 can be downloaded from the website: www.whitleyaward.org

The Gleitsman Foundation invites nominations for the 2007 International Activist Award, which honours exceptional individuals whose vision and courage inspire others to join with them in confronting and challenging injustice. The award is open to anyone residing outside of the United States. The 2007 Award will honour those who have struggled to correct social injustice. The Lemelson-MIT award for sustainability supports individuals whose inventions enhance economic opportunities and societal well-being in developing and/or developed countries, while protecting and restoring the natural environment. The Council on Foundations is seeking nominations for its new Critical Impact Award to recognize grant-funded projects that have had a demonstrated impact on the common good and can serve as models for others in philanthropy. Awards will be given to foundations and their grantees. The Council requests submissions from programs funded by family, independent, operating, public or community foundations, or by international or corporate grantmakers (either individually or in collaboration with others); have been underway long enough to document having had an enduring positive impact and have provided real philanthropic leadership by establishing philanthropy as the innovators or architects of social change.
