MANAGING EDITOR, ENGLISH LANGUAGE PUBLISHING

China Development Brief is looking for a native English speaker to serve in Beijing as Managing Editor of our English language publishing (monthly newsletter, website and Special Reports), and to start work in the early summer of 2007.
The person appointed will be expected to work for a 2-3 year period, researching and writing some articles for publication but, more importantly, having an explicit mandate to guide the evolution of the publications towards “localisation” by developing and enabling a Chinese writing team of 5-7 people to assume full editorial responsibility. The objective is to create an independent source of quality information, written in English but mainly by Chinese people and from a Chinese perspective, for an international readership that has a specialist interest in China’s social development.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate the following capacities:
• Excellent writing and editing skills, supported by significant professional experience
• A good understanding of China (which is likely to entail Chinese language proficiency)
• Strong training/mentoring skills combined with the ability to recognise people’s potential and help them to achieve it
• The ability to build and lead a team of people while also preparing them for independence
• Understanding of official development assistance and private philanthropic engagement with China
• The ability to create sustainable management, administrative and financial systems and procedures
• Sound business planning and marketing skills
• The ability to represent the publication in public fora and in relationships with donors
