JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE (ENGLISH): Media Officer
POSITION TITLE (CHINESE): 媒体主任

PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The Media Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing press work and communication strategies to win Greenpeace campaigns, and for increasing public support and understanding in Hong Kong and mainland China of Greenpeace’s campaigning objectives.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan, co-ordinate and execute media activities of Greenpeace China.
2.Contribute to the development of, and to proactively co-ordinate cohesive and creative mass communications strategies for Greenpeace campaigns including incorporation of the strategies, tactics and messages of the campaign into press release and report launches, political conferences, direct actions, and reactions to external events. In addition, the Media Officer will identify and target specific political, social and industrial sectors outside of the traditional mass media sector in both the local and international media.
3. Co-ordinate the selection of videographers and photographers, as required, for Greenpeace China media activities.
4. Proactively provide communications-related input on the future direction of campaigns and feedback on successful and unsuccessful communications strategies and media coverage as needed; proactively seek and recommend opportunities for communication projects.
5. Advise on media potential of direct actions, campaign materials and campaign plans and on improving campaign communications strategy. Help co-ordinate timing of events to prevent conflict.
6. Write and, in some cases, initiate press releases and background information for media and campaigns and prepare materials for international conventions, actions, and other events and activities.
7. Initiate Feature/Soft Stories to publicise Greenpeace Campaign messages.
8. Build and maintain a sound general knowledge of all Greenpeace campaigns and issues, in order to be capable of responding to general press inquiries.
9. Prepare and organise press conferences. Handle press enquiries and build up and maintain media contact database.
10. Be on call after hours and weekends as necessary during major Greenpeace campaign pushes and for urgent press calls.
11. Responds to public inquiries about campaign issues and other matters. Prepares materials and publications when needed.
12. Work closely with the Communications Manager to ensure coherence of public messaging.

KNOWLEDGE
1. Knowledge of the overall goals and intent of Greenpeace (including policies, guidelines, programs, campaigns and project activities): to lead campaign activities in support of the world's largest environmental protection group.
2. Knowledge of environment/ecology issues in general: to provide specialized campaign expertise; to promote environmental concerns.
3. Knowledge of the media including responsibilities, equipment, techniques, policies, practices, scope, audience, tactics, structure, impact: to use the media to further campaign objectives; to increase awareness and gain public support; to communicate with relevant industry and government.
4. Knowledge of campaign techniques, strategies and practices: to provide support and cover, when needed, to campaigners.
