We took the fast train, the morning of May 7. The train passed through intensive cultivation and urban areas. We disembarked in Qinhuangdao a large port and industrail centre where we met our driver and van. There were now four of us, Glenda and I, Mark Wang our national guide, and Gu, a 21 yr-old student who is interested in birds and birdwatching.
俺们在5月7号早上乘坐快车，列车穿过紧密的农耕地带，和城市。俺们在秦皇岛下车—一个大海港和工业中心，在那俺们见到了司机和面包车。俺们现在有四人了，格兰大，俺，马克王（中国的向导）和古，一个21岁的愤青，爱好鸟类和观鸟。
A half-hour drive took us to the Jinshan Hotel in the vacation spot of Bei Dai He where we stayed five nights. We were to have gone down the coast to the legendary Happy Island but it was closed to birders as a large golf course and vacation complex was being built. Furthermore, it is perhaps through as a birder destination because of this development.

Thus our birding spots were as follows:

· The Jinshan Hotel Grounds – lawn, hedges and shrubs between the buildings.
· 金山宾馆附近—房屋间的草地，土坡和灌丛。
· The Jinshan Field just across from the back gates of our hotel was a gravelly, weedy field that once had been a summer palace (probably the only reason nothing has as yet been built on it). This was square and not much larger than a football field.
· 金山的空地，宾馆后门出去就是一片荒芜的，野草丛生的空地，据说曾是神马夏季行宫（可能因此没被用来建房子），此地方方正正，足球场大小。
· The Friendship Hotel Grounds – more open lawns plantings, some mature trees. Undoubtedly other hotel grounds and the many large private estate grounds were good for migrants but they were off limits.
· 友谊宾馆地儿—更加开阔的草坪和植被，有些长成的大树。无疑，那些酒店和楼盘周围的地方对候鸟很相宜，但去不了。
· Lighthouse Point on the shore about 10 munutes from our hotel. We visited this spot three times seeing little or nothing.

· An area called the Reservoir by British tour groups is a wetland with reedbeds and a bit of open water – the estuary of a small river and adjacent woodlands with much of the understory cleared away.

· The Sandflats – extensive open flats that seemed never to be inundated by the tide. These were almost devoid of birds when there looked to be habitat for all manner of waterbirds.

· Abandoned fish/shrimp ponds about 15 km south at the Xanehe River bridge, These supported good numbers of migratory waders. We had to observe them from the road and thus could not approach as cosely as we wanted.

· Old Port, about 2.5 hours drive south. This would have been where we embarked for Happy Island. The tide was out and thousands of shorebirds were at the limit of vision, although some closer offered some studies.

· Formerly there were two woodlots in the open farming and fish pond area near Old Port. Just recently “Big Wood” was cut to the ground destroying a heronry and a migration stop-over. We visited Little Wood (also dubbed Magic Wood by UK birders) an area of smaller trees and scrub, which also had a heronry and some migrants.
· 本来老港口旁边的农田和鱼塘那儿有两片林子，最近大点的林子被砍光了，毁掉了一个鹭鸟和候鸟停歇的地方。俺们造访了小点儿的林子（大不列颠鸟人称作神奇树林），那儿有小些的树和灌丛，也有鹭鸟和候鸟光顾。
· JiaoShan, a range of low mountains about an hour and a half to the north. We were fortunate that Mark worked hard to gain us entry as the area was closed on account of the high fire danger.

There were about 50-60 birders stating at the Jinshan, mostly as members of tour groups. These were almost all Brits – we and an Indian woman were the exceptions.

Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis: Common at all wetlands. 20 mating and nest building at the Reservoir.

Great Bittern Botaurus stellaris (L): We flushed 1 from the edge of the marsh in the Reservoir; nice as we had “heard only” this species in the UK years ago.

Black-crowned Night-Heron Nycticorax nycticorax: Fairly common in the Reservoir, fly-overs, and nesting at Little Wood.

Striated Heron Butorides striatus: a single in the Reservoir.

Chinese Pond-Heron Ardeola bacchus: A few at the Reservoir.

Cattle Egret Bubulcus ibis: Nesting at Little Wood and a few others.

Little Egret Egretta garzetta: Nesting at Little Wood and common at the Reservoir and Sandflats.

Great Egret Egretta alba: 5 at the Reservoir; interesting to observe the black bill in high breeding condition on this Old World subspecies.

Grey Heron Ardea cinerea: Fairly common.

Purple Heron Ardea purpurea: 1 on both Reservoir visits.

Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia: 3 on the Sandflats on our first visit.
白琵鹭，第一次去沙滩时见了三只。
Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna: 12 at the Sandflats.

Mallard Anas platyrhynchos: A few at the Reservoir.

Spot-billed Duck Anas poecilorhyncha aonorhyncha (L): 5 at the Reservoir
and a few more south in ponds south of Bedaihe.

Garganey Anas querquedula: 4 pairs at the Reservoir, the males particularly handsome.

Hen Harrier (Northern Harrier) Circus cyaneus: A female flew aong the ridge at Jiaoshan, probably migrating.
白尾鹞，一雌在Jiaoshan飞过山岗，兴许在迁徙
Japanese Sparrowhawk Accipiter gularis (L): 1 migrant soared over Little Wood.
日本松雀鹰，小树林上空一迁徙
Amur Falcon Falco amurensis: 4 including 3 males migrating over the Sandflats. On our second Reservoir trip one put on a show sallying for dragonflies. A lovely bird.

Northern Hobby Falco subbuteo: 1 at our hotel and 3 in the fields near Little Wood.

Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus: 1 along the shore near the hotel.

Koklass Pheasant Pucrasia macrolopha (H): 1 or 2 heard at Jiaoshan, but no chance of seeing them.

Common Pheasant Phasianus colchicus: Heard daily and a couple seen; these were the “Ring-necked” pallasi subspecies.
雉鸡 ，天天听到，见着了几个，是有颈圈的
Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus: Common in the reedbeds (30) and water at the Reservoir.
黑水鸡，芦苇地常见，30只，水库的水域也有
Eurasian Coot Fulica atra: A few in the reedbeds of Bedaihe Wetlands Park (the Reservoir).
骨顶鸡，北戴河湿地公园（水库）的芦苇地有几个
Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus osculans: 3 on a mudflat at Qili Hai, about 30 km south of Bedaihe.

Black-winged Stilt Himantopus himantopus: 14 at the Yanehe ponds.

Little Ringed Plover Charadrius dubius: 2 at the Reservoir wetlands and Sandflats,5 at Yanehe Ponds and 4 at another fish pond.

Kentish Plover Charadrius alexandrinus: 8 showed well on the flats at Old Port and another 2 were at Yanehe ponds.

Lesser Sand-Plover (Mongolian Plover) Charadrius mongolus: 1 in the Xanehe ponds was in fine alternate plumage as were most of the shorebirds.

Greater Sand-Plover Charadrius leschenaultii: 1 on the flats at Old Port allowed us to note the differences from Mongolian Plover.

Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola: 1 at Yanehe River bridge and 8 on the flats at Old Port.

Red-necked Stint Calidris ruficollis: 3 in fine breeding plumage at the Yanehe Ponds were a first for us in alternate plumage.

Temminck's Stint Calidris temminckii: 9 at the Yanehe Pond and another 6 at other fish ponds on the second day to the south.

Long-toed Stint Calidris subminuta: 3 at Yanehe and 7 at another pond were in high plumage. The rufous-chestnut margined tertails should make it easy to distinguish this from alternate Least Sandpiper.

Sharp-tailed Sandpiper Calidris acuminata: 1 at the Reservoir estuary and 2 at Yanehe Ponds. Again, 1st for us in breeding plumage.

Dunlin Calidris alpina: About 60 well out on the flats at Old Port were of the sakhalina subspecies by range.

Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferrugina: 35 in fine breeding plumage were at the Yanehe Ponds.

Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago: We were surprised to see 11 feeding out in open fish ponds.
扇尾沙锥
Swinhoe's Snipe Gallinago megala: We flushed 1, which called, from the reedy shore at the Reservoir.

Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica: 100’s at Old Port (maybe 100’s further out) with a few close enough to enjoy.
斑尾塍鹬
Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus variegatus: Small numbers (~10) at Sandflats and Old Port. Old world subspecies with white line up back.
中杓鹬
Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata: A few at Old Port.
白腰杓鹬
Far Eastern Curlew Numenius madagascariensis: 2 at Qili Hai and a few more at Old port.
大杓鹬
Common Redshank Tringa totanus: 10 at Sandlats the first time, 8 at Yanehe River ponds and 4 (2 pairs) displaying over Little Wood.
红脚鹬
Marsh Sandpiper Tringa stagnatilis: Up to 90 at the Yanehe fish ponds.
泽鹬
Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia: At all flats, with a high of 12 at Yanehe ponds.
青脚鹬
Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus: 2 flushed at the Reservoir.
白腰草鹬
Wood Sandpiper Tringa glareola: 2 at Sanflats and 4 at Yanehe Ponds.
林鹬
Terek Sandpiper Xenus cinereus: Best sen at Old Port where up to 10 but 1or 2 at each of the other shorebird ponds.
翘嘴鹬
Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos: Fairly common at all suitable habitats.
矶鹬
Common Black-headed Gull Larus ridibundus: 40 at the Reservoir creek estuary and a few elsewhere were almost the only gulls.
黄脚银鸥
Black-tailed Gull Larus crassirostris (L): What a relief to find 1 2nd calendar year bird at Yanehe River when we thought that they would be common.
黑尾鸥
Gull-billed Tern Gelochelidon nilotica: 2 at Qili Hai, an estuarine area.

(Eastern) Common Tern (Nordmann's Tern) Sterna hirundo longipennis: 2 pairs displaying over Little Wood and a couple of others elsewhere.

Little Tern Sterna albifrons sinensis: 2 pairs were calling and in nuptial display flight at Old Port.
白额燕鸥
Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida: A nice swirling flock of 20 at The Reservoir and another 30 at Yanehe River.

White-winged Tern Chlidonias leucoptera: About 20 over rice paddies north of Old Port.

Eurasian Collared-Dove Streptopelia decaocto: 2 at Jiaoshan – surprisingly few

Rufous Turtle-Dove (Oriental Turtle-Dove) Streptopelia orientalis: Quite common in gardens.

Spotted Dove Streptopelia chinensis: Fairly common in gardens and open areas
珠颈斑鸠
Rock Pigeon Columba livia: Common in urban environments.

Oriental Cuckoo Cuculus saturatus (H): 1 was singing on our last morning visit to the Friendship Hotel grounds. There would have been more later.

Fork-tailed Swift Apus pacificus (*): 4 flew over on our last early morning at the Jinshan Field – the beginning of their passage.
白腰雨燕
Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis: 1 on each visit to the Reservoir.

Hoopoe Upupa epops: 1 or 2 at each site.
戴胜
Eurasian Wryneck Jynx torquilla (*): Glenda missed the first foraging on the ground by the abandoned tennis courts at Jinshan Hotel. Another flew up from a cultivated field at the Reservoir.

Grey-headed Woodpecker Picus canus: 1 or 2 at each woodland sites.

Great Spotted Woodpecker Picoides major: heard and seen at all woodland sites around Bedaihe.

Rufous-bellied Woodpecker Picoides hyperythrus (L): A pair lived in the Friendship Hotel grounds but we only saw them fairly well on our first visit.

Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica: Quite common.

Red-rumped Swallow Hirundo daurica: Common, nesting under the hotel eaves and seen over water.

Richard's Pipit Anthus richardi: 2 on Jinshan field in the early morning of our last day.

Olive-backed Pipit Anthus hodgsoni: 2 separate birds seen very well in hedges and gardens.
树鹨
Yellow Wagtail Motacilla flava: A few of more than one subspecies at the Sandflats and the Reservoir.
黄鹡鸰
Grey Wagtail Motacilla cinerea: 1 0r 2 at the Reservoir.
灰鹡鸰
White Wagtail Motacilla alba: A few seen along shorelines including at least two subspecies.

Chinese Bulbul (Light-vented Bulbul) Pycnonotus sinensis: Common in gardens.

Siberian Rubythroat Erithacus calliope: Although we’ve seen this bird before it’s always a star. Bob saw a male in The Jinshan Hotel grounds, May 7; the next day we saw 3 including 2 males at Friendship and again on May 10 we saw 2 males and a female at Little Wood for a grand total of 7.

Siberian Blue Robin Erithacus cyane (L): Another star bird. 2 males were in our hotel garden on 7 May and 2 more males at the Friendship Hotel grounds on 10 May.

Red-flanked Bluetail (Orange-flanked Bush-Robin): 1 seen briefly at Little Wood.

Daurian Redstart Phoenicurus auroreus: 1 stuning male in the Jinshan Hotel gardens.
北红尾鸲
Stonechat Saxicola torquata maura: A common passage migrant with groups of 20 – 30 in the Jinshan field, the edges of the Sandflats etc. Clements lumped all stonechats as one while Gill and Wright split them in to African, European and Siberian.

Although we had some species on several days, May 10 was thrush day, when
we had 7 species on the Friendship Hotel grounds and one more at the Reservoir!
俺们虽在其它几日也见了几只，5月10号是个“鸫”天，我们在友谊见了7个种，水库另一个！
White's Thrush (Scaly Thrush) Zoothera dauma: 2 at the Friendship, perhaps the same ones two days removed – or perhaps different. Lovely, big ,bold Mistle-thrush like birds.
虎斑地鸫
Siberian Thrush Zoothera sibirica (L): 1 bird, photographed at Friendship was a nice tick, but, sadly, a female.
白眉地鸫
Chinese (Eurasian) Blackbird Turdus merula mandarinus: 1 on both trips to the Reservoir (and a Brit. found the nest) Surely a major split candidate this bird has a harsher, more repetitive and less melodic song. It is also much more robust than merula in addition to several other differences not by authors.
乌鸫，两次去水库各一只，（以英国佬找到一巢）。显然是分离新种的强大候选，此鸟叫声粗糙些，重复更多，没那么婉转，说明了的区别以外比起merula种更强壮
Grey-sided Thrush Turdus feae (L): Two days in a row at the Friendship. His handsome bird is endemic to China in the breeding season.

Gray-backed Thrush Turdus hortulorum (L): Hearing about this bird very late in the day I ran back up to the Friendship and found it with other thrushes at about 6:30.
灰背赤腹鸫
Eye-browed Thrush Turdus obscurus: The commonest thrush with high counts of 6 at the Reservoir and 8 at the Friendship.
白眉鸫
Dusky Thrush Turdus naumanni eunomus: 1 on the Jinshan Field and 2 in the Friendship Hotel grounds.
斑鸫
Chinese Song Thrush Turdus mupinensis (L): 1 on the big thrush day at the Friendship.
宝兴歌鸫
Black-browed Reed-warbler Acrocephalus bistrigiceps (L): on our 2nd Reservoir trip we coaxed a singing bird into view and another was nearby. Apparently this is a common summer bird but a late arriving species.

Eastern Crowned Leaf-warbler Phylloscopus coronatus (L): 1 in shrubbery along the street on the way back from Friendship to Jinshan was a nice get.

Pale-legged Leaf-Warbler Phylloscopus tenellipes (L): We found 1 in the Friendship Hotel grounds and, minutes later, came upon some British birders who had found another.

Greenish Warbler Phylloscopus plumbeitarsus: 2 at Litte Wood and 1 at the Friendship.

Arctic Warbler Phylloscopus borealis: 5 around Bedaihe the 1st day but, surprisingly none thereafter.
极北柳莺，第一天再北戴河5只，奇怪后来没了
Pallas's Leaf-warbler (Lemon-rumped Warbler) Phylloscopus proregulus:
Common but the most was the first day (May 7) with at least 25.
黄腰柳莺，常见，第一日见最多，（7号），至少25
Yellow-browed Warbler (Inornate Warbler) Phylloscopus inornatus (L): the commonest Phylloscopus warbler, especially after the call and song were learned and especially May 10 with 80+ recorded.

Radde's Warbler Phylloscopus schwarzi (L): 1 was singing a lovely Cettia-like song and 3 were seen at the Reservoir on our 1st visit. After this we got onto the call note and appearance and had a few each day.

Dusky Warbler Phylloscopus fuscatus: A common warbler in the hotel hedges and other places that offered cover. High count of 20.

Asian Brown Flycatcher Muscicapa latirostris (L): 1 seen May 7 with the wave of birds in the Friendship, 2 at Little Wood and 2 at the Reservoir. Apparently much commoner later in the month.
北灰鹟5月7日见一鸟于一群别的鸟，小树林2只，水库2只，显然本月后来更多
Yellow-rumped Flycatcher Ficedula zanthopygia: A stunner! Singles, all males in the Jinshan Garden, the Friendship Grounds and Little Wood.

Mugimaki Flycatcher Ficedula mugimaki (L): We had our first, a male at Little Wood followed by another male in the Friendship and a female at the Reservoir.

Taiga Flycatcher Ficedula parva: A lovely little bird, heard and seen each day in small numbers up to ~6.

Vinous-throated Parrotbill Paradoxornis webbianus: Quite common in small groups at the Reservoir.

Père David's Laughingthrush (Plain Laughingthrush) Garrulax davidi (L): This was one of our main targets at Jiaoshan. We were not disappointed seeing 5 (2 really well) and hearing others for a total of about 10.

Chinese Penduline-Tit Remiz consobrinus (L): 50 in two flocks along the edge of the Sandflats were on passage and were the only ones seen.

Marsh Tit Parus palustris: 1 on our first Reservoir visit.

Eastern Great Tit Parus major minor: Split by Gill and Wright. Common resident.

Brown Shrike Lanius cristatus: Common pasage migrant, seen every day in small numbers.

Blue Magpie Urocissa erythrorhyncha: A common species around Bedaihe.

Large-billed Crow Corvus macrorhynchos: Fairly common at Jiaoshan.
